Following on from the success of the Skills Weekend in previous years, we are pleased to offer the opportunity to join us again in 2026.
A weekend of skills learning aimed at leaders new and old. On the Saturday, young leaders are allowed to attend for the day.
The weekend runs from Friday evening, 15th to Sunday 17th at Lunchtime, this is a fully catered event.
There is also the opportunity to visit for the day where lunch is provided and young leaders are welcomed to join from 9am till 18.00 on Saturday 16th.
Nights away will be a full weekend course starting on Friday evening till Sunday afternoon, and you will be required to camp.
The Paddle Sport Safety and Rescue is a full day course, one running each day
Fire lighting
Whether you have experience lighting fires for your sections, or haven’t a clue this sessions explores the basics of fire lighting as well as sharing some tips and tricks to make any fire lighting sessions more engaging.
Backwoods Cooking
Cooking at camp, or just making s’mores at the hall on a troop night? This session shows you how to take your outdoor culinary exploits to the next level!
Pioneering
A Scouting staple, why not take those knot tying skills a step further and build some cool gadgets and structures you can use in your campsite.
Axe & Saw
Always wanted to show your young people how to use axe and saws but maybe lack the confidence to do it safely. This session takes you through the safety basics and then shows you some cool projects you can do with your young people that they can take away with them.
Archery – Kit maintenance
Aimed at those who already hold an Archery GB qualification and/or Scout permit for Archery. This session is designed to help you with the basics of looking after the Archery equipment in your meeting place or wherever you undertake sessions.
High Ropes
Why not take advantage of Lapwings onsite High Ropes equipment to test your head for heights and maybe find out more about what it takes to became an accredited High Ropes instructor.
Knots & Paracord
Learn some basic knots to teach your sections, then take it up a notch by completing some really useful and fun paracord activities.
Water activities
Take the opportunity to try out Canoeing, Kayaking, Paddle boarding and Raft building. If you fancy becoming an instructor in any of the above, we can offer advice on how to take the correct steps, and what experience you may need to build on.
Hillwalking (offsite)
A whole morning or afternoon session that includes a short hill walk local to Lapwing. All aspects of planning, preparation, navigation and incident management are worked through during the session.
Climbing (offsite)
A whole morning or afternoon session conducted local to Lapwing (venue to be confirmed). Take part in traditional climbing, and if its something you’d like to explore further our Instructors will explain how you can go about becoming an instructor in your own right.
OSM
Scouting admin getting you down? Know how important it is, but just can’t get your head around how to navigate OSM? If you answered yes, then this session is exactly what you need!
A run through the basics and a chance to ask any questions you might have about how to take advantage of some of those features you’ve maybe seen or heard about, but dare not touch.
Risk Assessments
Risk assessments can be some of the most daunting things we do as Scouters. Where do we start? What do we need to include?
Fear not, our session leaders will take you through what you need, and take away lots of the dread by showing templates and formats you can use to make Risk assessment easier.
Nights Away
Whole weekend – Ready to take the lead on your sections next camp? Nights Away training takes you through both the practical and paperwork aspects you’ll need. There are sessions included on tent pitching, Backwoods cooking and Axe and Saw.
Paddlesports
Already have some experience in Canoeing, Kayaking or Paddle boarding and want to become a Scout permitted instructor?
Our assessors will be on hand to take you through whatever you need to do to gain your permit, and if you already meet the criteria, they may be able to sort your permit there and then.
